Largely put together by Ansel Adams for friend and Polaroid founder Edwin Land, Polaroid's library contains more than 1,000 photographs by a multitude of renowned artists. The Polaroid Corporation filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and ceased production of their trademark instant film soon thereafter. Now, as part of their bankruptcy order, the library of prints is going up for auction at Sotheby's. Some of the artists whose work is included in the collection feel they should get first rights to the return of their own artwork but, nevertheless, the auction will go on--June 21 & 22 in New York City.
