Nikon D800 Released: Much more affordable

Yesterday Nikon announced the D800 & D800E (Enhanced). In my opinion this is in response the the extravagantly priced Nikon D4. These bodies will start at $3000.00 USD and offer the coveted HDMI out like the D4.

According to the press release:

"Filmmakers have the choice of various resolutions and frame rates, including Full HD 1080 at 30/24p and HD 720 at 60/30p. By utilizing the B-Frame data compression method, users can record H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format video with unmatched integrity for up to 29:59 minutes per clip (normal quality). This format produces higher quality video data without increasing file size for a more efficient workflow. The optimized CMOS sensor reads image data at astoundingly fast rates, which results in less instances of rolling shutter distortion. I have seen his work years ago but never knew who he was. I was first introduced to his work when picking up a free VICE magazine in San Francisco. I saw a bunch of nude kids on a tree, and when I mean tree, this tree was HUGE. It was strange that a free publication would put nudity on the cover of a free magazine.

- is it nudity or a bunch of young people frolicking in their birthday suits?-
When looking at McGinley' work, it may appear as a bunch of young people running around naked and hanging out. It is indeed that but only on the surface. If we deconstruct the body of work, it feels like moments shared between people, places, and adventures. Nudity has never been a negative thing to me, but serves as a clue to what the photographer wants the viewer to understand. After looking through the body of work, the fact that they are nude escapes the equation because the viewer is forced to view these young people naked. This removes the initial shock and the viewer can actually understand what is happening in the photographs. When you remove the clothes you are left with what is truly human, the subject is exposed, it can depict a vulnerability or strength depending on how the photographer constructed the work.

-Strange Pairings; a black eye and a bird on the shoulder -
McGinley has some interesting pairing going on inside of his body of work, specifically this studio shot. There is a lot of symbolism in this piece that I found moving and beautiful. Even though abuse is tragic, there is a sense of beauty in the black eye, her pose, expression in the face and the juxtaposition of the bird and its gaze into the young woman. Again beauty is in the eye of the beholder, to each his own.

Episode One: American Muay Thai

I want to thank you for viewing Inside the Fight. This is the product of hard work and the love for the sport. It started with an idea and passion for Muay Thai. I want to give American Muay Thai an avenue of exposure through, well produced, artistic viral media.

This video is honest, and straight from the mouths of the individuals that are responsible for making this sport what it is. I wanted to provide you different views of Muay Thai and give the American fighters a platform to express their opinions about the sport, it's lack of exposure, and the contrast between Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts.

After releasing the prior Inside the Fight videos, the Muay Thai community in America has proven they want a series like this. I am proud to say that the community got together and supported theses videos by sharing and liking it through Facebook which provided each video large number of views with in a short period of time.

Please help us grow by sharing this video with anyone that would be interested in learning about Muay Thai or that would appreciate a well put together series. Support the fighters that helped put on an amazing display of Muay Thai at Club Nokia. The more exposure this gets the better chance we have. Helping Muay Thai grow in America helps the entire sport grow as a whole.

FUJI FP100c Negatives

FUJI FP100C NEGATIVES

So I bought a pack of Fuji FP100c and decided to take a weekend to shoot random things. The out come of the negs were so so. The bleach does something cool to the negs after the ink washes away. There is a muted quality to the neg and it's vibrancy is reduced. When using the bleach product on the neg, one has to be careful on the amount product used. I suggest to have water running on the neg as you use a brush to remove the ink. That way it doesn't seep in to emulsion. Take you time and you can get some really decent images.

This is a portrait of Mat I took with the sun behind him. The original Fuji pic had a deep blue sky like the picture of the basket ball hoop above. I enjoy the sloppy edges of the neg and the shift of colors. These negs aren't intended to be tac sharp and high quality. I used a Land Camera 104 for these images so sharpness was never an issue. I knew this would be soft in the first place. There is a painterly quality to these negs.

This is a portrait of a tattoo artist/car enthusiast named Tommy that has a shop outside of my work. He was outside smoking a cigarette and asked if I could take his picture. Even though the neg was damaged, I like it a lot. It reminds me of how wet plates turn out if the emulsion is not coated evenly. I like this portrait a lot. The purple hues on the edges make it very special

This portrait of Kristina is very retro looking. I enjoy it a lot. There is a 1970s feeling to it. This is probably one of the best negative I reclaimed from the batch. I believe I can do a better job next time with taking my time and using a diluted solution.

Well It appears as Nikon has made its first full frame HD video DSLR. Looks amazing with the ability to transfer via wifi. It is reportedly supposed to be around 6K.

Fuji FP-100 Negative Reclamation!

After seeing a post about the new Type 55 film that is being reborn I was looking through the interwebs and saw that people were creating a usable negative from the Fuji FP-100 instant pack films. When I saw the video I was amazed. That means, you can scan your negative and even print your negatives through an enlarger and create an amazing C-print. Check out the video!

Here is another one. Music is kinda lout but you can see the aftermath of the scan. Its pretty good and still keeps the nostalgia of the polaroid/instant film. I have heard of people using flatbed neg scanners that are only capable of scanning 120 film. People have scanned the negs in halves and stitched them together in photoshop!

Pretty awesome. I think I will try this next year and purchase a polaroid 600SE which has an excellent mamiya lens with manual exposure settings. SICK.

Greetings everyone,

It has been a while! I have been a busy dude doing a lot of things and planning the right steps to achieve specific goals in 2012. For those that follow my blog, you understand that my work horse (Hasselblad) got stolen. I decided that I wanted something that was more hand held friendly so I purchased a Rolleiflex 2.8c date around 1955-1960.

The Physical:
I like the little camera. It is compact, light and quiet. It feels nicer around the neck when wearing it for a full day of shooting compared to the Hasselblad. Waist level view finder is ok, I am used to it due to how the Hassey was made. This version of the Rolleiflex does no give the opportunity to use a prism view finder so the level that you shoot is different. When I was taking shot of people that were way taller than me, I had to stand on apple boxes or a chair to shoot portraits just to be eye-level. This is a draw back in my opinion if your subjects are like 6' or taller, but great for some one sitting down or for a full length shot.

Loading the film is pretty easy, but the draw back is there arent any multiple backs. This really didnt matter to me because on my Hassey, I had only one back. Something I used to use alot was a Polaroid back for my Hasselblad to test my shots. THIS was extremely helpful because when you test on a polaroid, that is what you will 9 out of 10 times will get on the neg.
Since I do not have a Polaroid back to test my shots, I have to rely on my light meter which is fine. I am confident enough to set my apature correctly with meter readings. Worst case senario, I test digitally. I find that testing digitally does not render the same in the analog format, but that is my personal opinion and my understanding.

Exposure:

The exposure setting on the Rolleiflex was different. On an SLR (Single Lens Reflex) setting the aperture was done on the lens itself. The F-Stop and Shutter speed on the Rolleiflex is on the body right under the view lens ( top lens) and just above the taking lens (bottom) lens. You can see the aperture change due to the setting window right on top of the taking lens.

The shutter speed on the Rolleiflex is limited, and is not that accurate. There is a 1/50th of s second setting but not a 1/60th so the image may be a little under or over exposed depending on your setting. So for those that scan, its wise to under expose your negs rather than to over expose, especially for slide film. With the latitude of film, this should not be an issue.

What is pretty cool is that the Rolleiflex has leaf shutters so it can sync at all speeds. I have 80mm Xenotar. I have read reviews that the Xenotar and Zeiss Plannar lenses are pretty much indistinguishable up to 20x20 images. But even then, its only really a trained eye can tell the difference. Again, a huge advantage of shooting film is the ability to enlarge to great sizes and still retaining sharp, high quality images. Plus negatives are beautiful. The physical aspect of the shot is something that can not be rendered digitally. This makes me want to shoot high speed B&W film and print wall size images.

The Photograph:

This photography was taken with the Rolleiflex and 400ISO Fuji Film. This was sharpened in Photoshop and color corrected. I enjoy the quality of light and how it is rendered on the image. I used a tripod and set the focal length but I was a 2.8 because of the available light. Being this wide, if some one breathes its easy to fall out of focus.

There is a minmum focal length of 3.5' I am having issues with sharpness on the images i create. I have a feeling the view lens needs to be adjusted to the taking lens.. either that, I NEED new glasses =)

Then again it could be just me, but the depth of field is amazing. SUPER Shallow, fits my style of photography very much. This next shot I used the timer. Yes people a 1950s camera has a timer and there is not a battery included or needed. I placed the camera on the edge of a table focused and held still because I used available light. I wish it was sharper, its sharp enough. Remember, nothing will be as sharp as digital, and digital will never have the same feeling as an analog camera. Its like electronics vs chemistry.

Conclusion:
I think my Rolleiflex needs to CLA'ed (clean lubed adjusted) but that will cost me maybe 200 bucks depending on whats wrong with the camera. So far the sync works, shutter speeds work ok, and the lens looks good, but there is an issue with focus that I have yet to determine. I wonder if its user error. We will see.

I like my Rolleiflex, the feel of it in your hands, the style of the photograph belongs to the Rolleiflex. At the end of the day the Rolleiflex and the Hasselblad are two different camreas.. but I do miss my Hassey. After all, it was the first camera I started with.

On Oct 21st, 2011 Romie Adanza, Filipino American Muay Thai Fighter is set to face one of the toughest fights of his career against Thailand's own Langsuanlek Sasiprapa at 115lbs. I had the opportunity to meet with Romie and have him speak about Muay Thai and his fight on the M-One promotions card. Having the time to sit with Romie was educational and I am very fortunate to have gotten to know Romie on that level.

I was approached by the Muay Thai Association of America because of my prior work in the Muay Thai Community. I wanted to create something for the fans of the sport, a way for these fans to connect to these fighters on a personal level and understand how important it is to support the scene and the fighters at make it. I didnt want it to be over produced, I wanted it to be clean and organic because I feel like the glitz and glamour of things would take away from whats most important thing; the fighter and the fight itself.

For me, its not about the promotion throwing the event, Im doing it for the sport, and for my art. I want to raise the bar as an artist, and I want to help promote the sport the best I can. Its not about a website, its not about a specific organization or blog or how many hits its going to get. Its time for us as fans, promotors, fighters to do the best we can to bring Muay Thai together as a collective and support it. If we do not support it, then all these great cards that have been happening in the past year will not happen anymore.

Everyone and their mom got married!.. geeez..

So many things been going on this Summer. First, Muay Thai in the west coast has jumped to levels I thought I would have never seen. The level of shows, competition, events and all around fan base has double or tripled in the past 3 months. It is exciting time to be fan of the sport. For those that do not follow the sport, this is a time in California where I consider the "Golden Age of Muay Thai" in west coast. We have various champions represent the USA and they have legitimate belts and will face or have faced serious competition.

I have been showing a ton lately and I havent even been looking for shows. I am grateful and humbled by all the attention I have been getting from the art scene and I will continue to spread my art to whom ever wants to host it. My honorable mentions have been wonderful and now the majority of my work that I have created have either won awards or have been recognized by important organizations. Im blessed.

Last, being busy with work as a photo editor, photographer, and finding time for personal work is hard thing to manage. I am still trying to find the right balance until then.. i walk the tight rope of life.

I sent that girl a few msgs looking for my serial number. I know its mine.. i had this camera for like 6 years.. Im like 95% sure its mine. I had the honor to shoot Juliette. I met her at the LAUNCH festival in Sacramento. She was one of the Van Der Neer models. I met her along with the kindest person in the world, Natalie and they took a trek down to Los Angeles to visit friends. I asked to shoot her last minute and she was down to make some art. This is an impromptu photo shoot in the Burbank Hills. A friend was kind enough to let me shoot at his home.
It was an interesting experience to say the least. I wish I had more time to shoot and hang out with these two lovely ladies. Juliette has indeed became one of my muses. Expect more for us.

It is always nice to see familiar faces and friends that I have made through out the years of photographing muay thai. LAUNCH 2011 was an amazing time. Once i stepped out of the car I canvased the area and met with my good friend Alison Kranz. She showed me the room that I was given. It was about 10X10'room that was painted yellow. My prints were already up and I decided to bring my portfolio and my "Romance" book for extra work to show. Back when I would shoot Alison, I would always test with my Hasselblad with a Polaroid back and through out the years of collaboration, I have built quite a collection. I never noticed that Alison kept them and she gave me the stack to display. We decided to get something to eat because Mike, Leo and I had a long previous night in San Francisco checking out King Britt, Natural Self and Jeremy Sole. During breakfast, we caught up and spoke about how skinny she has gotten but reassures me that she was naturally that thin.

After breakfast Alison told me that she had to get ready for the fashion show and I asked her if I could tag along and meet the models and designers. After meeting the models at the Van Der Neer preparation house, I decided I wanted to have give-aways for those that liked my work and stopped by and talked to me. Mike and Leo thought of making mimosas for the guests. We were not allowed to have alcohol in our rooms but there was a " Dont ask Dont tell" policy so we went to the local liquor store and bought 3 bottles of champagne, some vodka, orange juice and cranberry juice.

Once the show started I ran out of cards within 2 hours. Mike and Leo went on 2 different liquor store runs which totaled about 7 bottles of champagne and a grip of ice because the small fridge in our room was not working. I was impressed by the turn out and the amount of artists that stopped by. It was refreshing, being able to show work and not really stress about things except enjoying the night and having quality conversations about art.

As the sunset, people were returning and new people were still barely coming in to check out the event. Leo and Mike became my bartenders/reps and introduced my work to people willing to listen. I have met some great people, and enjoyed the night. To top it off, I sold a print to someone that really wanted it and that always feels good.

The morning of the LAUNCH 2011 event, I met with super star model Alison Kranz and had breakfast. She invited me back to a house to meet the rest of the models and the designers. I cant complain, house full of friendly models and air conditioning. Did i mention it was super hot.

I saw a post by High Snobiety about how clothing lines and camera makers are joining forces to create cheap cameras and market them at a ridiculous price. I used to be a gear head and name brand type camera dude, but over the years I have seen photographers with expensive cameras creating expensive looking crap. I have seen photographers with old technology make beautiful stunning images. So really, why buy a toy cam for a ridiculous price, or purchase a Holga at a trendy clothing store for when you can purchase one that works the same for 15 bucks?! But for them avid collectors I understand, but if you think this will make your photography even better, I suggest to take that money and spend it on a work shop. I am one to admit, I collect old camera so I guess I need to practice what I preach?

AGFA 110 Film is back!

Who would have thought the analog film company AGFA would be resurrected? Well Japanese analog company PowerShovel brings this beloved film back to life in 110! I sure hope that the make the AGFA ULTRA 120 again. That film is wonderful! make sure you check out the site for some cool info.

Lady Di is a nick name she received and I kinda like it. Ms. Abapo is a very talented young photographer who I had the pleasure to meet. I had 3 shota left on a roll of film and had forgot I had my camera on me. When I ask people If I could take their portraits they usually get self conscious but Diane was was quick to let me shoot her. Check out her new tattoo.

Artifacts: Blessed Hand Wraps

I have been working on a short and I had the pleasure to have a conversation with one of the most knowledgeable Muay Thai practitioners in Southern California. During the interview, he brought many artifacts that related to Thai culture and it's national sport. The photograph above is of a pair of hand wraps that were blessed by monks. There is a cloth sheet, from my understanding, that has written prayers and is blessed by monks. That cloth then is cut in to long strands which is used to protect. As the wraps reenforce the wrists and hand is also serves and dual purpose as a later of spiritual protection.

Pretty cool, speaking with Mr. Paulo Tocha was fun, interesting, humbling but very educational.

Random People During My Travels

When I travel or if I am bored in pubic, I start looking for people to photograph with my phone. I try to compose the photograph the best I can with out being obvious. It is a fun challenge and I get interesting models to pose for me.

I like how the sun hits the people waking, long shadows are beautiful. I just remember looking for cheap movie tickets and I was taken to this theater in the valley. Looked cinematic to me.

Looking at art is a healthy thing for artists. Even though my preferred medium is photography, I am inspired by other types of art especially Renaissance painters, sculptures, old print making and litho.

I like how statues and sculptures are lit in exhibitions.

East Coast Visit

My trip to the east coast was refreshing. I miss living in a city that has great mass transportation. There is something about walking around and bumping into people. Yea its crowded, but you can travel all over the city with ease as long as you plan ahead of time. I think that's why I really love San Francisco. Washington DC is cool, small but really patriotic. It's a nice place to visit.

New york was cool, I was thankful that the weekend I was there, the weather wasnt too humid and hot. People were young in Williamsburg, early 20s to mid to late 30s. The city is alive for younger people at the beginning to mid career parts of their lives.

New York city was on another level. Alot of business professionals I was fortunate enough to stay with a friend Stephen Higgins at his Chelsea apartment with an amazing view and location. He welcomed me with open arms and it was a great two days talking about business, art and catching up on life. It has been 3 years since I was in contact with him and there was alot to talk about. We talked about our careers as artists and our evolution to where we are currently. It was enriching to spend time with other artists I was introduced to by Stephen. It was something I needed. I received great feed back about my work and collaboration are in the works.

New York is a beautiful place to be as an artist. Its expensive, different from the west coast, but I have a fondness to it. It keeps calling me every year one way or another, either for business, pleasure, or both. It is something I keep considering and will find my self in New York one day when my career takes me there.

Alexander Mcqueen Exhibit NYC Metro

During the last day of my East Coast trip, my friend Stephen and I went to go to the Metro Museum of Art in New York to check out the Alexander Mcqueen Exhibition. I enjoyed it very much. Mcqueen's work was displayed well with a personal sound track and interesting holograms and short movies.

It was apparent through out the exhibit that Mcqueens work is influenced by dark ideas and sadomasochist themes. What I found interesting were the videos of his well produced fashion shows with high concept.

One collection in the exhibition was called "Romantic Nationalism," where the influence to this collection was his personal heritage.

The rest of the exhibit was great! There was an area that had motion pieces that attracted large crowds. There was one in particular in the "Romantic Exoticism," that contained a Joel Peter Witken influenced video, Amazing to say the least.

Impossible Project NYC June 2011

During my visit to NYC last year i missed the Impossible Project Store & Gallery. I knew when I returned this year that this was going to be a priority because I have a love for instant film. The place was a nice size with impressive sized prints hanging on the walls.

The Impossible Project is a gallery as well as a merchandise store with excellent examples of their film, refurbished vintage cameras, and accessories such as flash cubes, bags, straps and books. It was nice to meet the workers and listen to how passionate they are about the new instant film. We chatted about new film and the future of the Impossible Project with hopes to bring a store to the west coast.
